The incredible bespoke
There are people who are good at their job, and then there are people who have turned their craft into something closer to a calling. Maria Bain (pictured above) is firmly in the second camp.
I arrive at Belleza Luxury Skin Aesthetics, Maria's home studio in Hillcrest, North Shore. Her treatment room is warm, considered, and quietly professional. The heated bed is ready. Soft scents drift through the air. Everything has been thought about. Nothing feels improvised.
This is the world Maria has been building for 17 years, although her journey in beauty spans closer to 28. She started in this industry at 18, spending a decade with a company that ran salons across Auckland, working her way from therapist to Training Manager, opening salons, learning the discipline and habits that still define her work today.
Eventually, the pull of travel, marriage, and a desire to do things her own way led her to step out on her own. Maria and husband James (a sports rehabilitation specialist whose busy recovery practice runs almost entirely on word of mouth), built their respective businesses from the ground up. What a team.

Before the treatment even begins, I'm guided into Maria's welcome ritual - a foot soak and a herbal tea, while she gently draws out what my body needs today. It's an unhurried beginning, deliberately so. "This is why I love the home business model," she tells me. "I can be slow. Holistic. Personal. If I know someone's had a hard time lately, I can book them an extra half hour, because I can." That kind of flexibility, that genuine attentiveness, isn't something a busy commercial salon can easily offer.
I'm about to experience the Maria Bain 75-minute facial, the most popular in her menu, and Maria talks me through what to expect, though nothing she says quite prepares me for how it actually feels.
Maria begins with a back massage, her hands working through the tension I’ve been carrying. Her movements are barely noticeable; she glides around the bed with such quiet intention that at times I forget she's there at all. There's no clattering, no disruption, no sense of effort. Just hands, and warmth, and the slow unravelling of a body that's been holding on too tight. I’m now feeling relaxed, and ready for my facial.

A deep double cleanse, softened with steam. An oscillating brush cleanse that is divine. It's highly sensory in the best possible way; one of those experiences that's genuinely hard to describe until you feel it, at which point you wonder how you ever lived without it. Maria follows with an enzyme peel, selected for my skin specifically, using Environ - a range she clearly trusts and knows deeply. Every product, every step, has been chosen with intent.
And then: the hot stones.
Maria has introduced small hot stones to her facial work in recent years, and the response from clients has been so strong she's made them a signature. I understand why the moment they make contact. The heat doesn't just sit on the surface, it penetrates. Into the cheekbones. Into the nasal and sinus passages. Into the temples. Into the base of the skull where so much tension quietly accumulates, day after day, mostly unnoticed until someone releases it. The kind of relief that makes you exhale slowly and completely.
What comes next makes perfect sense as a counterpoint: the Esthemax Hydrojelly mask. Applied thick and cool, it lands on skin that has just been deeply warmed. The contrast is extraordinary, that shift from heat to coolness adds an entirely new dimension to the experience, a sensory punctuation that somehow makes everything feel complete. The mask stays on for fifteen minutes while Maria continues working (a neck and scalp massage that, combined with the mask's cooling weight tips me somewhere close to the edge of sleep).

When the mask peels away, Maria finishes with a tinted sunscreen - a thoughtful final touch that means my newly cared-for skin is protected the moment I step back out into the world.
My skin feels fed. Brighter. The kind of glow that isn't about products sitting on the surface but about circulation and care working from within. My body feels as though it's had a full night's sleep; that deep, boneless heaviness of proper rest. My mind seems quieter, in a way that - as a sufferer of severe tinnitus - it rarely does.
Maria Bain has 25 years of expertise, but what she offers at Belleza isn't expertise in the clinical sense. It's mastery expressed as care. A collection of everything she loves about her craft, brought together into one seamless, unhurried experience. The Maria Bain Facial isn't an appointment. It's an hour of genuine restoration.
Your skin and nervous system will thank you.
