Free, Glowing, and Totally Worth the Cold: Takapuna Winter Lights!

Winter's dark and dreary, until Takapuna lights up for four glowing nights of festival magic.

Winter in Auckland can be a bit of a slog. It's dark by 6pm, everyone's hibernating, and the biggest decision of your evening is usually "trackies or really comfy trackies." But for four nights at the end of July, Takapuna throws that whole mood out the window. The streets glow. Sculptures come alive. Thousands of people willingly leave the couch and head outside in the cold, on purpose, because it's genuinely that good. Welcome back, Takapuna Winter Lights.

Mark it down: Thursday 30 July to Sunday 2 August 2026. And if you missed it last year - where have you been? 2025 was an absolute stunner, pulling in more than 60,000 people across four nights. Naturally, 2026 is going bigger.

Free, Family-Friendly, and Genuinely for Everyone

Here's the best part: it costs nothing. Zero dollars. Bring the kids, bring your nana, bring your mates who need to experience Shore life, because this one's for literally everyone. Central Takapuna transforms into a glowing, wander-around wonderland, and there's no wrong way to enjoy it.

It's also spreading its wings this year, taking over four spots instead of just one: Hurstmere Green, Central Hurstmere Road, Potters Park and Waiwharariki Anzac Square. More turf, more art, more excuses to keep exploring "just one more corner."

The Man Behind the Magic

The whole thing is curated by internationally renowned light artist Angus Muir, whose work has lit up cities all over the world - so Takapuna is in very good hands. Expect immersive, larger-than-life installations and interactive sculptures that don't just want to be looked at, they want you in them. Touch it, trigger it, become part of it. That's kind of the whole point.

Terence Harpur, CEO of the Takapuna Business Association, is pretty thrilled to have it back for another year. "Thanks to our 2026 sponsors, we're delighted to host our popular Winter Lights Festival once again," he says, pointing to last year's crowds who travelled from across Auckland and beyond to soak up the town's creativity and community spirit.

Long-time event producer and Takapuna local Dan Move, who works alongside Angus Muir on the festival, puts it simply: it's all about bringing people together and creating a bit of wonder in the middle of winter, turning the town into a shared celebration of art, light and connection for four nights running.

This year there's a homegrown twist too: live performances from Takapuna Grammar School's own rising music and performance talent will grace the main stage, alongside the usual lineup of live entertainment and food.

Bring The Sparkle

Organisers want you to lean into it. Think fairy lights, glow sticks, a light-up crown, or whatever glowing accessory you can grab from one of the festival stallholders - the brighter, the better.

As Terrence puts it, wrapping up warm "with a little extra sparkle" only adds to the atmosphere. And with more than 130 places to eat and drink across Takapuna, there's every excuse to turn your visit into a proper night out.

Getting In (Free, But Don't Sleep On It)

Because this thing has gotten so popular, entry now runs on free allocated sessions across the four nights - basically a clever way of making sure nobody's squished shoulder-to-shoulder trying to see the same sculpture. Tickets are free, but grab yours early, because last year's turnout says these will go fast.

Oh, and here's a nice little bonus: scan your ticket at the Prize Entry Booth during your session and you're in the draw to win a $1,000 Takapuna shopping spree. Not a bad reason to rock up a few minutes early.

A few things to know before you go:

• It's cashless: bring a card or your phone wallet, not your coin jar.
• Takapuna's public spaces are alcohol-free, but the bars and restaurants nearby have you sorted if you're after a drink.
• It's smoke-free too.
• The team's serious about sustainability: 83% of waste was diverted from landfill in 2025, and they're chasing an even better number this year.
• Do the planet (and the parking situation) a favour: bus, bike, walk or carpool if you can.

Where to Refuel

Takapuna's eateries properly show up for this, with plenty staying open late for the crowds.

Need something quick between installations? Taylor's on Hurstmere, Eat Now, Fatima's, Pita Pit, Delight Sushi, Wok N Noodle and Sal's will sort you out without eating into your sightseeing time.

Want to sit down and make a proper night of it? Rosie's Red-Hot Cantina, Benny's Burgers, Burger Burger, Takapuna Surf Club, Al Forno, Daikouku and Ajisen Ramen are all solid picks, and if you're after a drink with your dinner, Regatta Bar, Goldie's Bar & Yard, Botticelli and Florrie McGreals are calling your name.

And obviously, it's winter, it's dark, you need a hot drink or something sweet in hand at all times. Duck Island, Movenpick, KiwiYo, Kokoberry and No. 1 Pancake have dessert covered, while Starbucks, Gong Cha and Takapuna Bar will keep your hands warm.

A few tips from the people who run this thing every year:

• Book your table. Everywhere will be packed all weekend - don't rock up and hope for the best.
• Chase that late-night caffeine. Plenty of local cafés stay open later than usual just for the occasion.
• Be patient. It's going to be busy - with other visitors and with the businesses working flat out - so bring your kindest self.

More Than Just a Pretty Light Show

What really makes Winter Lights special is that it's not just a flashy weekend event dropped into town - it's woven into the community all year round through Schools, Engagement and Shine programmes.

And it genuinely takes a village to pull off. Winter Lights 2026 is presented by the Takapuna Business Association, backed by Auckland Council Events, Tātaki Auckland Unlimited, Angus Muir Design, Go Media and Barfoot & Thompson, with funding support from Aotearoa Gaming Trust, The Lion Foundation, Four Winds, North and South Trust, Pub Charity and Foundation North - plus a long, proud list of local businesses chipping in to keep the lights on. Literally.

Last year's crowds proved this is one of Auckland's best winter nights out, and with an extra site and even more to see this time round, 2026 is shaping up to top it. Grab your session tickets, wrap up warm, and go find the light.
